Dr Carly Jennings: returning to Nepal to provide clinical care
22 June 2015 | Events

Dr Carly Jennings from the Women’s is in Nepal helping to provide medical care and support to the devastated region through international aid organisation TrekMedic.

In April an earthquake, described as the worst natural disaster to strike Nepal in more than 80 years, killed more than 8000 people and injured 23,000.

Incredibly, Carly left Nepal just hours before the quake hit. She had been working with TrekMedic helping to provide clinical care.

The earthquake flattened villages and left hundreds of thousands of locals homeless and Carly said this second trip was about helping to provide similar care.

“I want to go back to help,” Carly said before flying out on Tuesday. “I’m using three weeks of my annual leave and will be helping the organisation establish basic medical clinics.”

An obstetrics/gynaecology resident at the Women’s, Carly said she had also been an intern at the Royal Melbourne Hospital and her trauma training there would also be valuable.

“The work we do will be mainly GP presentations,” she said. “We will work closely with the Ministry of Health who will tell us what they need and where we can help.”

TrekMedic is based in Melbourne and is a non-profit team of volunteer doctors, nurses and allied health professionals working with under-privileged communities worldwide.

Carly said the team helped to bring much needed basic health care, education and emergency aid to the remote villages that have limited access.
