We are thrilled to announce that Marie Jones, nurse and midwife at the Women’s, is a Nurse of the Year finalist in the 2015 HESTA Australian Nursing Awards.

The awards recognise individuals or teams who make a real difference to the lives of patients, their families and the community.

The prestigious Nurse of the Year Award recognises an exceptional registered or enrolled nurse or midwife who delivers outstanding patient care.

Marie has been recognised for her work with women who have undergone female circumcision or infibulation, after undergoing the procedure in countries where the practice is culturally accepted.

Marie plays a crucial role in building rapport and trust with women who visit the Well Women’s Deinfibulation Clinic.

"Despite the physical and psychological impacts of female circumcision, providing women, often who have been marginalised, with the best quality experience through support and education is my concern", said Marie.

"Being there for women through all aspects of their health including pregnancy, miscarriage, and other gynaecological issues is something I’m passionate about."

Winners of the HESTA Australian Nursing Awards will be announced at the Awards dinner in Brisbane on 15 October. We wish Marie every success.
