Childbirth Education - Parkville: main page

You can choose to book into a three session weeknight series or a weekend program. All these programs include a hospital tour.

The Childbirth Education program will help you know more about what to expect during pregnancy, labour, birth and taking your baby home. Women participate in the program when they are around 30-32 weeks pregnant.

Topics include:

  • Signs of labour
  • When to come to hospital
  • Progress of labour and birth
  • Practical coping methods during labour
  • Options for pain management
  • Unexpected outcomes, such as emergency caesarean 
  • Importance of early skin to skin contact with your baby and the first breastfeed

Topics covering parenting and breastfeeding include:

  • Breastfeeding benefits for mothers and babies
  • The importance of the first breastfeed and skin to skin contact
  • Normal newborn feeding behaviour in the first 48 hours and beyond
  • Safe sleeping and settling
  • Transition to parenting and relationship changes
  • Relationship with your baby
  • Community supports

Hospital tour

Hospital tours are conducted by an experienced midwife and include:

  • When and where to come to hospital
  • Parking options
  • Tour of Birth Centre and brief description of care during labour and birth
  • Tour of post-natal ward & discussion on care in the first few days

If you attend a community program, one of the sessions will be held at Parkville and will include a hospital tour.
