The Dysplasia Clinic offers comprehensive diagnosis, treatment and management and is part of the Women’s Gynaeoncology Clinic. Referrals are accepted for women with an abnormal cervical screening result or where an abnormality is evident.
Inclusion criteria
Refer if the Women’s is the patient’s closest hospital with a women’s health service, and the patient has any of the following in cervical screening:
- One HPV types 16 and/or 18
- Three consecutive non 16/18 HPV with low grade cytology changes or better in a normal risk person
- Two consecutive non 16/18 HPV with low grade cytology changes or better in a higher risk person
- Identifies as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander
- Age ≥ 50 years
- ≥ 2 years overdue for screening at the time of the initial screen
- One non 16/18 HPV in a very high risk person:
- Diethylstilbesterol (DES) exposure
- Immune-deficiency or immunosuppressed
- Age ≥ 70 years
This aligns with the National Cervical Screening Pathway (Flowchart PDF, Cancer Council) and Statewide Referral Criteria.
Urgent referral
Mark your referral as urgent if the patient has any of the following:
- Abnormal appearance of the cervix
- Suspected neoplasm
- Symptomatic
In these cases, a cervical smear test is not required before referral, and a previous negative cervical smear result is not a reason to delay referral. We may triage these referrals to the Oncology Unit.
For assessment or care due to concerning or deteriorating condition, please consider the most appropriate of:
- Re-refer for triage reassessment
- Women’s Emergency Care
- Registrar review – contact via the Women's switchboard on (03) 8345 2000
Exclusion criteria
- Normal CST (unless urgent referral criteria present)
- Referrals without a CST or unsatisfactory results (unless urgent referral criteria present)
- Referrals that do not meet Statewide Referral Criteria

All referrals must include essential demographic, medical and social history details, and relevant information about the presenting complaint.
